Why is my Mercedes radio asking for a code?

Your car's audio system disables itself if it is disconnected from electrical power for any reason. To make it work again you must enter a specific five-digit code on the preset buttons.

With that many combinations possible, guessing is not realistic — the system is designed that way.

You will meet it after any of these:

• The battery went flat, or was disconnected for work on the car
• The battery was replaced
• The radio fuse blew
• The car sat long enough for the battery to drain
• You bought the car and the previous owner never passed the code on

How do I enter the code on a Mercedes radio?

Use the preset buttons — the ones you store your favourite stations on — to enter the five-digit code. Entered correctly, the radio starts playing.

The mistake that costs you a try

If you press a wrong digit, do not start over and do not try to correct it mid-code.

Complete the full five-digit sequence, let it fail, then enter the correct code cleanly.

You get three to ten tries depending on the model. Use them up and the unit goes into temporary lock mode.

Before you disconnect the battery

If you have battery or electrical work coming up, find your code first. Far easier to have it in hand than to discover the radio is locked when the car comes back.
