How to enter your Toyota radio code

Why is my Toyota radio asking for a code?

A Toyota factory radio shuts itself down the moment it loses battery power, and it will not work again until the three-digit security code for that exact unit is entered. That is the whole point of the system: pull the radio out of the console and it becomes useless to a thief.

You will usually meet it after one of these:

• The battery went flat, or was disconnected for work on the car
• The battery was replaced
• The radio fuse blew
• The radio was taken out, or the car sat unused long enough to drain the battery
• You have just bought the car and the previous owner never passed the code on

The code is tied to the radio, not to the car and not to the key. A replacement radio from another vehicle will have a different code.

What does SEC mean on a Toyota radio?

SEC is the security prompt. The radio has power and is working — it is simply waiting for the three-digit code before it will produce sound. Nothing is broken, and nothing needs replacing.

Toyota uses a three-digit code, which catches people out. Honda uses five digits, Volkswagen uses four. If you have been handed a longer number for a Toyota, it is almost certainly the radio serial or model number rather than the unlock code.

How do I enter the code on a Toyota radio?

Four steps. Have the three digits written down in front of you before you begin, and do the whole sequence in one go.

1. Press and hold the tune up (^) button and preset 1 at the same time.
2. Enter your three digits on presets 1, 2 and 3 — one button per digit. Say your code is 255: preset 1 enters the 2, preset 2 enters the first 5, preset 3 enters the second 5.
3. Press and hold the scan button.
4. The radio powers itself off. Turn it back on and it plays normally.

Once it is open you will need to set your station presets again, and the clock may need resetting. Those were wiped when the power was lost, not by the unlocking.

What does HELP mean on a Toyota radio?

HELP means an incorrect code has been entered more than nine times and the radio has locked itself out. Stop. Further attempts will not clear it and can make the situation worse.

A radio in this state needs an override code rather than the normal unlock code. We can supply one — send us the radio details and we will tell you exactly what is needed.

Mistakes that lock people out

• Guessing. Nine wrong attempts is all it takes to reach HELP. Three or four guesses is a large slice of that allowance for no benefit.
• Using the wrong buttons. Presets 1, 2 and 3 carry the digits. Presets 4, 5 and 6 do not.
• Stopping part-way. Enter all three digits, then hold scan. Do not abandon the sequence half done.
• Reading the model number as the code. The unlock code is three digits. Anything longer is a different number.

Where do I find my Toyota radio details?

Toyota is the one brand where we do not work from a radio serial number. For Toyota we need your 17-character VIN and the radio model number.

The model number is printed on the label on the radio casing. The VIN is visible through the windscreen on the driver's side, on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, and on your registration and insurance documents.

Sending both together is what lets us match the right code first time.

Before you disconnect the battery

If you have work booked that involves disconnecting the battery, it is worth getting your code beforehand rather than afterwards. It costs the same either way, and it turns a stressful afternoon into a two-minute job at the roadside.

Almost always one of these: the vehicle details never reached us; our email bounced back as undeliverable; the email address given to us had a typo; or the radio model number was written down incorrectly. Check your spam folder first, then get in touch and we will chase it.

Does one code work on any Toyota?
No. The code belongs to that individual radio. Fit a different radio and you will need the code for that one.
