What does SAFE mean on a VW radio?

SAFE means the anti-theft coding has activated and the unit is waiting for its four-digit code. It appears whenever:

• The radio is disconnected from the vehicle's electrical system
• The battery is disconnected or goes flat
• The radio fuse burns out

You may also notice a flashing LED on the unit when the radio is off and the key is out of the ignition. That is normal — it shows the radio is coded, and it is there to make a stolen unit worthless.

How do I enter the code on a VW radio?

The VW method is different from most brands: you do not type digits, you step each one up with its own button.

1. Turn the radio on. SAFE appears, then after about three seconds the display shows 1000.
2. Use presets 1 to 4 — one button per digit. Preset 1 controls the first digit, preset 2 the second, preset 3 the third, preset 4 the fourth.
3. Each tap moves that digit up by one. It runs 0 to 9 and then rolls back round to 0, so if you overshoot just keep tapping.
4. When all four digits are correct, press and hold the right side (>) of the SEEK button for more than two seconds, until you hear a beep.
5. A station and frequency appear in the display. The radio is ready to use.

What if I enter the wrong code?

SAFE comes back on the display, and it will flash. Check your code carefully before trying again rather than guessing — repeated wrong entries extend the wait between attempts.

If you have overshot a digit, remember it wraps around: keep tapping that preset and it will come back to the number you want.

Why is my VW radio asking for a code?

Any interruption to the power supply triggers it. In practice that means a flat or replaced battery, work done on the car with the battery disconnected, a blown radio fuse, or a car that has been standing unused. It also happens to people who have just bought the car and were never given the code.

The code belongs to the radio, not the car. A unit from another VW will have a different one.

Where do I find my VW radio serial number?

For Volkswagen we need your 17-character VIN and the radio serial number.

The serial is on the label on the radio casing, so on most models the unit has to come out to read it. Your VIN is visible through the windscreen on the driver's side, on the driver's door-jamb sticker, and on your registration documents.

Sending both together is what lets us match the correct code first time.

Before you disconnect the battery

If you have work coming up that means disconnecting the battery, get your code first. It costs the same whether you order it before or after, and it saves you standing in a car park with a silent radio.

No. The card is just where VW originally printed the code. We retrieve it from the radio's own details.
