Your Volvo stereo has a programmable theft deterrent system. It makes the player inoperable if it is removed from the vehicle, if the battery is disconnected, if the fuse is removed or blown, or if power to the radio is interrupted.
When that happens the radio displays EEEEEE.
You will meet it after any of these:
Turn the radio on, then use the preset buttons — the ones you store stations on — to enter your four-digit anti-theft code. The unit displays Code as you work through it, and the radio turns on once the fourth digit lands.
If the display reads codE or rpt, it is ready and you can enter the code on the presets.
You get three tries. After that the unit locks out completely and shows Eeeeee.
To reset it: turn the radio on, then leave the ignition key at position KP I for two hours. After that it will accept a code again.
If the display says OFF, leave the ignition key in position 1 with the radio powered on. That reset takes two to four hours.
Some Volvo units use a six-digit code. If yours needs six, press the ASUT button.
The SR-7145 radio/equaliser with the separate cassette deck is the awkward one: it requires a six-digit code, and to unlock it the unit has to stay connected and switched off for 24 hours.
If you have battery or electrical work coming up, find your code first. Far easier to have it in hand than to discover the radio is locked when the car comes back.
