Kenwood aftermarket head units lock to a security code tied to the unit's serial number. When the unit loses power, it asks for that code before it will play again. That protects it if it is ever stolen, but it also catches owners out after:
A factory radio's code is usually tied to the car it was built into. A Kenwood is fitted after the car leaves the factory, so its security code is tied to the head unit's own serial number instead. That is good news if the unit has moved between cars: the car's VIN does not matter, only the unit does. It also means the details you send us have to come from the unit itself, not from the car's paperwork.
It is on the sticker on the top or side of the unit's chassis. On most installs that means the unit has to come out of the dash to read it. The serial usually starts with letters followed by digits — send us the full thing, exactly as printed, letters included.
Kenwood has made a great many head units over the years, and the model number tells us exactly which one we are matching your serial to. Put the model number in the vehicle field on the order form, alongside the year and model of the car. Model plus serial is what lets us return the correct code first time.
