Radio says CODE, SAFE or LOC? What each message means
Different brands use different words for the same thing — the factory anti-theft lock. Here's a quick translation.
If your factory radio has gone quiet and the screen is showing an unfamiliar word, you're looking at its anti-theft lock. Different manufacturers display it differently, but they all mean the same thing: the radio lost power, the security lock engaged, and it needs its unique unlock code entered once to work again.
What the common messages mean
- CODE / CODE? — The radio is asking you to enter its anti-theft unlock code. Common on Honda, Acura, and many others.
- SAFE — The security lock is active. Common on Volkswagen and Audi radios.
- LOC / LOCKED — The radio is locked and waiting for the correct code.
- ANTI-THEFT / THEFTLOCK — A lockout message used on some vehicles. See our explainer on what TheftLock is.
- HOLD / WAIT — After too many wrong attempts, some radios pause for a set time before you can try again. Wait with the key on until it clears, then enter the correct code.
- Err / InoP — An error or “inoperative” state, usually after incorrect entries. The correct code still restores the radio.
Whatever the exact wording, the fix is the same: enter the correct unlock code for your radio.
Why it happened
These messages appear after the radio loses power — a dead or replaced battery, a disconnect during service, or a car that sat unused. It's a security feature working as designed, not a fault. Learn more about why your radio asks for a code.
