Your Volkswagen radio is showing SAFE and won't play. The anti-theft coding has activated and the unit needs its unlock code entered once.
SAFE is Volkswagen's version of the same anti-theft lock used across most brands. It appears after the radio loses power — a dead battery, a jump start, or the battery being disconnected for other work — and stays until the correct code is entered.
After a wrong code, VW units often show a count such as 1 SAFE, then 2 SAFE. Each failed attempt uses one of a limited number of tries before the unit locks out for longer, so it pays to have the correct code ready before entering anything.
Most brands take the code as typed digits. VW units usually don't — you step each digit up or down with a button until it matches, then confirm.
