If your Volkswagen radio is showing SAFE and will not play, the unit has activated its anti-theft coding. This is almost always triggered by a battery disconnect or a flat battery — VW head units are matched to the car electrically, so as soon as power is lost the radio assumes it may have been removed and locks itself until the correct code is entered.

SAFE is VW's version of the same message every locked factory radio shows — it just uses different wording than the CODE prompt you will see on other brands. Audi uses the same SAFE wording on a different range of units, which is worth knowing if you are comparing notes with an Audi-owning friend — the two are not interchangeable even though the screen looks identical.
Volkswagen has used several distinct head unit families over the years — Beta, Gamma and Delta on older cars, and the RCD 200 through RCD 510, plus the RNS 310 through RNS 510 navigation units on newer ones. Each family reads its serial number differently and enters the unlock code on a different screen, so we ask for the model printed on the unit itself (not just the car's year) along with the serial. VW serial numbers are typically prefixed VWZ — if the number you can see does not start with those letters, double-check you are reading the radio's label and not a different sticker under the dash.
