To get your Volvo radio code, send us your car's 17-character VIN and we email the factory code back — for most Volvos the radio never has to leave the dash. Below: what EEEEEE means, how the four digits go in, and how to recover from a lockout.
Volvo factory radios lock when they lose power. A locked unit shows EEEEEE, and it stays that way until the security code is entered. The usual triggers:
The radio is not broken. It is waiting for its code.
For most Volvos, just the VIN. It is at the bottom of the driver's side windshield, and also on your registration, your insurance card and the door jamb sticker. If you happen to have the radio's serial or model number, add it on the order form — it is optional, but it can speed things up. Either way, you do not need to pull the radio to order.
Turn the radio on, then use the preset buttons — the ones you store stations on — to enter the four-digit code. The unit shows Code as you work through it, and the radio turns on as the fourth digit lands. If the display reads codE or rpt, it is ready and you can enter the code on the presets. You get three tries. After that the unit locks out completely and shows Eeeeee. To reset it, turn the radio on and leave the ignition key at position KP I for two hours; after that it will accept a code again. If the display says OFF, leave the key in position 1 with the radio powered on — that reset takes two to four hours. Either way, it is a long wait, so have the right code before you start.
Some Volvo units use a six-digit code. If yours needs six digits, press the ASUT button. The SR-7145 radio/equaliser with the separate cassette deck is the awkward one: it needs a six-digit code, and to unlock it the unit has to stay connected and switched off for 24 hours.
