Everything you need to understand about why factory radios lock and how to unlock them.
If you've ended up here, your radio probably locked and asked for a code — and you have questions. This guide explains the whole thing in plain English.
It's a security code stored in your factory stereo. As long as the radio keeps power, you never see it. But the moment power is interrupted, the radio locks and demands the code — so a stolen unit is worthless to a thief.
The lock trips after any power loss: a dead or replaced battery, a disconnected battery, a blown fuse, or the radio being removed. You'll see CODE, LOC, SAFE, or a similar prompt.
The code isn't random — it's mathematically tied to a unique identifier: your radio's serial number or your vehicle's VIN. That's why we only need that one piece of information to look up the exact code for your unit. (See VIN vs serial number.)
